ADHD is one of the most common conditions in childhood.
Here are some facts about how it works.
ADHD Facts
ADHD is not caused by bad parenting, too much sugar, or too many video games. ADHD is a brain-based, biological disorder that is caused by differences in brain anatomy and wiring. It’s not a “sickness” and it won’t “go away.”
This disorder often runs in families. If your child is diagnosed, then you might want to pay attention because you might have it too!
ADHD involves a group of key skills known as executive function. This impacts the ability to focus, self-control, organization, use of working memory, flexible thinking, managing emotions, planning, getting started on tasks, and many other skills.
We know it impacts how kids function at school, and how adults function at work. It impacts men, women, boys, and girls.
Think of this disorder like an iceberg, where many of the symptoms lay hiding under the surface – out of sight but ever present. You don’t have to have all the symptoms showing to have the diagnosis.
ADHD-like symptoms affect everyone at some point. It only becomes a clinical diagnosis when one has higher challenges that others, and in more than one setting.
This is NOT something you grow out of. Some symptoms may lessen as one gets older, but the best way to deal with it is to MANAGE the symptoms.
